Coming back into this world was fabulous. Turner's writing is simply stellar. I enjoyed so much descriptions, wit, and more. She has that world so clearly imagined it is amazing. This is a journey story, but also about war, politics, slaves, empires against small nations, and individuals. You definitely don't need to have read the other books for this one, but easter eggs and more are fun for those who have. The fifth book does stand alone, but it made me want to reread the earlier books. It was exciting to read, but there were some slow parts before the conclusion picked up. Thoroughly enjoyable story of an Attolian and a freed slave escaping to safety.

I had a hard time getting in to this story, I kept missing Eugenides, and hoping that the story would get to him.

Absolutely, loved the ending, so maybe a 3.5. Turner has a real knack of surprising me with her endings.

I loved Turner's Queen's Thief series.. This story is a companion book set in the same world. It isn't necessary to read The Thief series to fully understand this one, but it did make it thoroughly enjoyable to understand references to former characters and kingdoms- and a few of them do make an appearance. (and really, if you like YA fantasy you should totally read that series anyway!)
This story reminded me very much of The Thief with a rather long journey, some story telling, some good plot t

It's been YEARS since I read anything in this series, but I still loved this book. I immediately checked out the first one because I definitely would have enjoyed it more had I refreshed my memory of the series. ...more
