Check out all the tags. This book holds so much for all kinds of readers who are broken in all kinds of ways, who need hope, who need a way to find the positive in the midst of hard times. The author never shies away from Ruthie's fears, or from the darkness or "stones" in her heart. She shows how to live with sadness and fear and anger but also how to grow out of them and away from them, even though shadows of them will be with you forever.

Wonderfully written account of a Cuban immigrant in the 1960s to NYC, Ruthie, who is involved in a multi-car accident when she is 10. The broken leg that results requires a full body cast for many months, and her struggles with falling behind in school, isolation because of her new community and immobility coupled with her discovery of reading and art (and Frida Kahlo!) and eventual recovery made for a satisfying and interesting book. While the story grew more engaging as I went on, I felt like the story was uneven. There were moving sections describing Ruthie's feelings and experiences, but other sections where the details were a bit tedious. In the end the story felt important, like it had a message to impart to children, but getting there wasn't an engaging. Unfortunately, the narrator was definitely part of the issue. While excellent with multiple accents, there was a cadence that got on my nerves.

I probably would have liked this more if I read it instead or listening to it. The book was read by the author, not an experienced reader. She read with a strange cadence with unnatural breaks in sentences. However, Behar told a poignant story of a challenging time in her life. Lots immigrant stories.
