What Members Thought

So many connections with this book. I thought about Ruby in THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN and WATER FOR ELEPHANTS. We are now questioning using animals for entertainment purposes, making this book timely and relevant. I was a bit disappointed that the character Henry Jack wasn't developed more. Exploitation of humans in sideshows is also pretty despicable. (connection: WHEN ZACHARY BEAVER CAME TO TOWN).

Somewhere between a 4 and a 5. Though there are some comparisons with a recent Newbery winner (Ivan), I liked this book much more. The growth of Lily, the main character, was believable and satisfying, and the elephant, Queenie Grace, was also excellent.

An elephant who has lost her daughter, a daughter who's lost her mother, a family grieving the death of husband, father, grandfather, friend, and mahout.
Dual point of view -- 12 year-old Lily and Queenie Grace (the elephant).
A book about overcoming fears, acceptance, forgiveness, loss, grieving, and bravery. ...more
