This was amazing and I enjoyed every page, even when I was having an anxiety attack because I was so worried Theo was going to give his wife syphilis.
One of the things I liked best was the depiction of the relationships between all the famous artists before they were legends. I'm a big fan of Georges Seurat and Paul Gauguin's work and it was really fascinating to read about them in relationship to Van Gogh. Grades (8?)-High School and Adult. A very detailed look at the lives of the Van Gogh brothers. The sons of a minister, both men struggled with mental illness, relationships and careers. They were dedicated to their family and especially to each other. I knew little about Theo until reading this book. He was an art dealer and very influential to the popularity and recognition of many impressionist and post-impressionist artists. He supported Vincent financially through most of his adult life. Nei

Interesting and kind of depressing. These two brothers just could never catch a break and their relationship was a constant work in progress. All the filial love, but loads of anxiety. The whole book is bundle of worry.
For me it was too long by about half and attempted to be exhaustive but also simple enough for the YA (middle grades?) audience. The result was choppy sentences, little depth into characters, and a narrative that felt like "this happened, then this happened, then he took a train ...more

An amazing book. The author is able to blend scholarship and research with a very human story of two brothers and their incredible lives. I've always loved Van Gogh's paintings and knew a little about his life, but this book helps put his work in more personal terms. The writing style is very accessible which kept the story moving without getting bogged down in too much detail. Even though it is a YA book, I think any adult who wants to learn more about Van Gogh will find this book helpful.

Heiligman recounts the difficult lives of Vincent Van Gogh and his brother Theo. Fascinating, but so very sad. Listened to this in very small chunks over the course of a couple months while referring to the print book off and on. Phil Fox's narration was excellent.

Van Gogh was so much more than a missing ear! And Theo! I didn't know anything about him until this book. This book would not have been possible without letters. I shudder to think of the history that will be lost because we no longer write letters.
