This book makes the experience of living in (or leaving) a city painfully real. As Nadia works her way across Aleppo trying to reunite with her family, she sees the devastation mixed with her memories of peaceful times superimposed. The reader gets a real appreciation of how much is lost (and of those trying to save) their culture and physical history. I worried for Nadia through the whole story.

This offers a sobering view of life for children in a war-torn city. In her brief but harrowing journey across the city, dodging national and rebel forces and meeting an assortment of memorable people, Nadia grows from a self-involved pop culture preteen diva to a brave and caring young lady. Dialog is a bit strained in that the characters offer SO much historical and political information in their conversations. That didn't ring true to me.
