Necessary book. Our world is in turmoil in 2018 with unintentional and intentional racism. This needs to stop. We need to make our children aware. Jewell Parker Rhodes use of white space and short sentence structure drives many powerful moments home. I was captivated from page 1 to the end!

Grades 5-9. Ghost Boys tackles an uncomfortable truth. Violence against blacks from police stems from subconscious racism. Why do Black youths have to be careful wearing hoodies and playing with fake guns? Why are they more likely to be pulled over?

In this story, Jerome is a seventh grader living in a poor area of town. He is bullied by kids at school and his family keeps him indoors to do homework and play video games. A new boy, Carlos, protects Jerome by intimidating the bullies with a preten

This is a book with a big message for the world. It would be splitting hairs to complain that it gets a bit preachy towards the end. It is meant to preach, and to bear witness, to inspire, to anger, to make us look at uncomfortable truths.

This is a book about a 14 year old black kid who gets murdered by a police officer, and because one of thousands of Ghost Boys whose spirits linger in our world...in order to inspire change? I think? Adore this book: message, narrative style, characters, and use of history to tell the story of racism in the present to a younger audience who can make change happen. This book is so well written for its audience. Such an important book for middle-grade readers.

This sad story tells a story on a level that maybe will make an impact on middle grade kids and help change our culture of violence.

An incredible middle grade book focusing on killings of innocent black boys and young men. It’s told in such a beautiful way and truly encourages one to examine their own bias and the history of systematic racism in America. If I was still a classroom teacher, this book would be a read aloud in my class.
