Melancholy, heart-wrenching, gorgeous writing, complicated. One to ponder.

I want to read Raymie Nightingale again, then re-read this slower. I think it's a savoring book, not a gulping it down book.

I feel like Kate DiCamillo peeked inside my soul and wrote down all the little pieces of me I wish I could share but was never that brave. And then she shared them and I was sad at first but then I felt so light and full of joy. The voice of this book, the characters, the comic relief of just one sentence echoing a thought from before, the language, the setting, everything. I adore this book with all my heart. Louisiana's Way Home by Kate Dicamillo is a beautiful story.

Grades 3-6. I did not make the connection with Raymie Nightengale and wish I had re-read it first. In this books Louisiana's grandmother packs them up and leaves Florida in the middle of the night. They cross the border into Georgia where Granny has all her teeth pulled and convalesces in a hotel room they can't pay for. Certainly the curse of abandonment is strong and Granny leaves Louisiana with a secret bombshell.

A charming tale of a young girl who is yanked away from everything she knows,..and then things get worse. While this is a book for children, adults can certainly benefit from reflecting on how the various adults little Louisiana meets interact with her and do or don’t prove helpful. The story is told in Louisiana’s strong, easy-to-love voice and the pictures she paints of the other characters, and the empathy she shows, make the read both meaningful and delightful.

I loved the voice of Louisiana. It was especially well done on the audio version. I didn't like the
dishonesty and cheating and general disregard for the law. ...more
