Definitely a window into the horrible lives of homeless street children in India. Horrible lives that are also filled with moments of beauty, love, compassion, camaraderie, and freedom. This is a story of two extraordinary sisters and the boys who become like brothers. In spite of the suffering and loss, this is a story filled with hope.

I’m thankful I could read this in one day. The story of four children forming a family and living in conditions I can’t imagine yet I saw every twist and turn in my mind. The treasure of friendship and willingness to love unconditionally is a gift.

#TheBridgeHome @penguinkids Drawn into this beautifully written journey with sisters finding shelter and friendship under a bridge. Thank you, Padma Venkatraman, for characters that stick deeply in my soul.

My Mock Newbery group selected this book for our May selection. I think this is the one to beat. Heartbreaking, yet triumphant tale of street children in India. Let's hear it for the teachers in this book. ...more

Grades 4-6. In India, Viji takes her sister and runs away from home where her abusive father beats their mother. Soon they are penniless and making a living picking trash heaps. It's a dangerous job with adults who would take advantage of them, gangs of kids who compete for limited resources and the unsanitary conditions that threaten their health.

Viji and Rukku do find some happiness when they find a dog and join with two boys and make camp on a bridge. They become their own little family and s

This book covers so many areas so eloquently... from caste system of India to an agnostic girl finding her way to believe God (her friend and caretaker) or in Hinduism (her mom)when so many bad things happen to disabled children being treated unfairly. I loved this book and want to share it with all.

This book touches on so many important issues in the world today. It is a great story and will appeal to middle school students while also giving them a window to a part of the world that they may be completely unaware of.

This story tugs at your heartstrings, especially as it is an accurate reflection of too many children in India and other parts of the world. Well-written, sympathetic, likeable characters, and a lifestyle unfamiliar to most American children.
