This book has so much to offer. A strong, female protagonist with STEM interests, insights into deaf culture, quite a bit of science content, and a satisfying story. It reminds me of THE THING ABOUT JELLYFISH (Benjamin, 2015). I consider it a Newbery contender.

Wow. So much to love about this book. The craft of the writing is amazing.

It's as close to an #ownvoices Deaf culture book as I've ever read. It's about Deaf and hearing; Nina who tries to sign right and Blue 55; Blue 55 and the other whales; fixing radios and finding the right frequencies; car batteries with corroded terminals; a planet that is knocked out of the solar system but still makes itself known. Loved the energy of fighting for a goal along with the relationship of Iris and her grandmother. The power is sharing when to jump in and grab what you want to touch.

This book from the point of view of a middle school student who is Deaf will add to any middle school classroom library. I'm excited to see more and more books being written that tell great stories with perspectives that the majority of middle school students may not have thought of before. ...more
