I'm grateful to the publisher and Libro.fm for allowing me the opportunity to listen to Lois Lowry read her newest memoir in verse. I am also looking forward to seeing the illustrations soon. Please, whenever possible, support local bookstores. Libro.fm allows one to do just that digitally for audiobooks. If you haven't seen their website, please check it out at libro.fm

Lowry's poems here are beautiful, absolutely beautiful. They are snapshots from World War Two that honor those we have lost in

Beautiful and sad and hope-filled and devastating.

I’ve not been to either Pearl Harbor or Hiroshima (though I hope to one day), but I felt the emotions of both places through Lowry’s words.

From the Author’s Note: “I guess the important thing is also the simplest: to acknowledge our connectedness on this earth; to bow our heads when we see a scorched tricycle or a child’s message to his lost grandpa; and to honor the past by making silent promises to our fellow human beings that we will work for

This verse autobiography is just beautiful and is Lowry's writing at her best--I highly recommend this book. Along with the beautiful writing, there are some illustrations that are appropriate and help convey the emotions drawn by Kenard Pak. An absolutely poignant verse autobiography, this is an excellent way to introduce an unit on World War II that is not Germany focused. This is clearly a standout for me this year for me, I am thrilled I picked it up. ...more

This lovely little book is a collection of poems about those affected by the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the U.S.'s retaliation. Lowry was born in Hawaii in 1937, so had always felt a special connection to that place. Sure to motivate kids to read more about Pearl Harbor and Hiroshima. ...more

Thanks to NetGalley, I was able to read this poignant look back at Lois Lowry’s childhood. Born in Hawaii, she was a 3-year-old living in Pearl Harbor when the Japanese bombed it. Through research, she puts a human face to some of the men who served on the USS Arizona. After the war ends, her father, stationed in Japan, is able to have his family join him. We get snapshots of other young people living in or near Hiroshima as well. Told in verse, this unique experience in her life is capped with ...more

I listened to Lois Lowry read this and then found the book to look at the illustrations. It’s sparsely written and I think that’s what makes it beautiful. The lack of embellishments give the truth voice.

I received a digital ARC from Netgalley.

On the Horizon is a look at the tragedies of Pearl Harbor and Hiroshima, told through the personal lens of Lois Lowry who was born in Hawaii and lived in Japan as a child. Through verse she puts names and faces to a few of the victims of both terrible events. I am awed by Lowry's ability to evoke such a emotion with simple rhythms and phrases. The poetry is beautiful and I can't wait to get a finished copy to see the illustrations.

This short book is lovely. Lois Lowry has a gift as a writer and she gets so much meaning into just a few poems showcasing real people and how lives (including her own) were affected by the beginning and end of the U.S. involvement in World War II. Great for any age upper elementary and up. Older readers, including adults, will have more context to draw on, but the words and illustrations will bring anyone in.

Wow! This was so different for Lois Lowry, but it was magnificent. It's WWII, namely Pearl Harbor and Hiroshima told through poetry. Many of the poems are the stories of those who perished in the battles. Completely beautiful and well worth it. ...more

It has been 75 years since the end of WWII. We all have read many books, seen lots of movies, and watched lots of PBS Specials about the war. In this very crowded field, Lois Lowry gives us fresh, new stories and perspectives about the momentous, world-changing event in elegant, touching verse.

Beautiful memorial to those that lost their lives in Hawaii and Japan in 1941/1942. Just beautiful!
