Amari and the Night Brothers was outstanding. I can't recall a time I have seen a brand new book go out so quickly from our school library. Once word spreads, five copies might not be enough to support all this magic! Highly recommend for middle grade and younger teen readers! ...more

This fantasy ride will definitely be a hit. 12 yo protagonist Amari - gritty, brave, bold, loyal and looking for genuine friendship - is well-developed and easy to root for in this action-packed, dark-magic fantasy. The plot hooked me early, was fast and straight-forward, and contained some surprising turns while Alston familiarized readers with his Supernatural World. Fun middle grade book, a magical urban fantasy. The similarities to Harry Potter are unmistakable, but the characters are fun and the plot is fast moving for young readers.

Amari is invited to supernatural school and wants to find out more about her brother Quinton’s disappearance. She does not fit in in part because of her family’s economic struggles.

4.5*. Very fun, with many initial parallels to Harry Potter, both in storyline but also with a similar wonderful creativity and magical imagination. Some interesting twists, too. This was easy to read and the story never got bogged down. I will be interested to read about Amari’s next adventure.

This book is the introduction of a new fantasy series featuring an African American female tween, Amari Peters. She discovers that the challenges of being an African American scholarship student in an elite private school are consistent with those in an elite supernatural school. The plot was a bit clunky, but I am encouraged that more books like this are becoming available.

I liked the details of the supernatural characters and their world. I would recommend this book to Harry Potter fans with a Men in Black vibe.
