This is the best children's book that I have read in 2021, and I have read some good ones. This novel in verse takes on fat-shaming, the last accepted prejudice, and other types of bullying. It is Fipps first book. I do hope that she is working on her next book because I can't wait. I love the strong, positive female protagonist, the clever language, the teachers, and the triumphant ending. (Was that a spoiler?) This book nudges BLUBBER (Blume, 1974) into the 21st century with the social media c ...more

The way I feel about this book is very similar to how I felt about Genesis Begins Again. It's just too depressing for me. I had to put it down and walk away.

There is nothing subtle about the way Ellie is bullied at school and at home and in public. It's just like sledgehammer after sledgehammer of emotional brutality.

I'm sure by the end of the book Ellie stands up to her bullies and feels better about herself. But the first half of the book was too cringe-inducing for me to want to take that j

An important book for every library/classroom library, if we're being honest about all kinds of representation. An important "walk a mile in your shoes" / own voices book for anyone who's ever had negative thoughts about a person because of their size, whether they said them out loud (like the mother, the brother, and other bullies in the story) or not. ...more

Look at that cute cover!!!! Don't you want to swim with this friend?
Instead of a joyful swim romp, the poems all centered on the horrible abuse this child suffered from doctors, parents, and peers about her weight. I stopped to protect myself from the trauma and DO NOT RECOMMEND this book to anyone, especially children.

A book that is necessary! We need to help kids understand that body shaming in a thing! Your "funny" comments aren't funny to everyone. And when it happens in the home..... that's just the worst. Everyone needs to hear Ellie's story. She is a brave, brave girl learning to stand up for herself! She has the two best of friends on the planet too! We need more Ellie's, Viv's and Catalina's! ...more

Ellie is a funny, whip-smart character who grows in self-understanding with the help of a kind teacher, insightful therapist and her loving but clueless father.

This was a difficult book to take in. I hope I can have a better understanding regarding people who struggle with weight issues.

This is an incredible middle grade novel about body-shaming and bullying of a young lady. It’s a testimony to the power of words and how hurtful they can be. I think this should be required reading for everyone.

Terrific book!

Share this with anyone who has felt uncomfortable within themselves. What a wonderful way to empower a person and to help them find their voice.
