I wish I had read this book to see the illustrations, but I listened to the audio and loved it. Answelica, the goat, stole the show, but I loved all the characters. In an age of heavy tech use it was a breathe of air to read something set in medieval times, a book with beautiful sentences and a plot that was unique yet also comforting. I will read EVERYTHING DiCamillo writes as she is perhaps the most talented contemporary children’s author currently writing.

A book for our times with enough wisdom to rescue us from the darkness.

A young girl, dirty, confused, shows up at a monastery unable to remember her past or how she came to be there. Meanwhile, a king has his soldiers searching the land for the subject of a prophecy that will end him— a subject that also happ

I am ridiculously sentimental and Kate DiCamillo plays me like a harp every time.

Bonus: a feisty Nubian goat among the main characters.

So much middle grade fiction reads like it is written for grown-ups. I wonder if there is a kid appeal here that I am missing. I do love the spunkiness of the girl and the loyalty of the goat and the monk.
