What an unusual, enjoyable book. It combined many aspects of Ancient Greece: a look at the lives of an enslaved boy, Rhaskos, a girl, Melisto, born into a house of privilege in Athens, his story told in verse, hers in prose, commentary and narration by a few different Greek gods, interactions with Sokrates and his philosophy, trial, and death, and the process of making pottery in this time, among others. One of the most distinguishing and interesting parts of this story is the use of Exhibits of

This one is LONG! My audio book ran out before I finished, and I wasn't interested enough to wait to check it out again. Here's the Amazon description:
In a warlike land of wind and sunlight, “ringed by a restless sea,” live Rhaskos and Melisto, spiritual twins with little in common beyond the violent and mysterious forces that dictate their lives. A creative and amazingly well written book. It doesn't seem like a book that would interest most children though. I was amazed at the stories created by the inspiration of the ancient Greek artifacts. I especially enjoyed the audiobook and the voice of the gods.
It felt like I went back in time as a ghost and was listening in on the stories. Definitely award worthy. ...more

I'm reading this by audiobook. Schlitz's fascinating, mystical storytelling rings clear. Told from multiple points of view. Unique presentation with museum curator highlighting various ancient Grecian artifacts--then flashbacks tell their stories culminating in a heartrending story arc with memorable characters whose stories intertwine, exposing the slavery in ancient times.

I LOVED this book. I listened to it as an audiobook. I loved the description of the artifacts that could have been in a museum and to see how they tied into the story.
There were some disappointing events with characters but it was realistic that not everything would be perfect for every character. I like how the lives of the main characters were weaved together. I liked Melisto and Rhaskos and their ability to persevere and be resilient in their life circumstances. The ending was a satisfying re ...more
