The art is wonderful, but the plot was clunky and sometimes confusing. While the characters were excellent to look at, it felt like they didn't quite come alive. Sophie is having trouble at school in the beginning but that is just left dangling. The ocean creatures' motivation didn't gel for me. And the villain was a total evil businessman stereotype.

I loved all the layers Santat brought to this imaginative tale.

Santat makes the leap from picture book author/illustrator to graphic novel author/illustrator. The story starts with a tragedy and ends with a triumph. I didn’t like the portrayal of the teacher. Can we stop making teachers the villains in children’s books?

This was very weird but super endearing and more emotional then I was expected. I just really like Dan Santat and his style.
