I recently reread Eyes and the Impossible with my own kids. Reading this story aloud is a magical and wonderful experience, much like the first time a parent reveals a new puppy to their children or when one sees a Saturday Night Live sketch that is destine to become iconic.
My kids were entertained throughout and especially loved how proud Johannes was of his speed, how absolutely clueless those darn ducks were, and the racoons' philosophy on biting to name a few of the many wonderful details t ...more

I have a confession: I skipped ahead and read the end because I needed to know there was going to be a plot. The first chunk of this novel seemed to be plotless and so it took me forever to get through it. But once I knew it was going somewhere (the quest to set the bison free), I liked it a lot more. The Eyes and the Impossible. It wasn’t on anyone’s mock list. Is it really for children? It strikes me as a book for a high school honors English class. Sophisticated vocabulary, themes, imagery. It’s going on the list with The Higher Power of Lucky, The Last Stop on Market Street, and Good Masters, Sweet Ladies. It makes me want to be a fly on the wall when the committee made this choice.

I could say so much about this book. Mostly, it deserved to win the Newbery. Secondly, as Monica said, I wish I had a classroom so I could read it aloud and talk about it with children. If you want to know more, read Betsy Bird's review.

I liked the Johannes' character. So confident he is the fastest creature on legs. The paintings have such a forest feel. The setting reminded me of Golden Gate Park with the nearby ocean, the windmills and museums and bison.

One of the best middle grade fiction books I have ever read. And one of the MG fiction books I would recommend to people of all ages. Listen to the audiobook if you can -- Ethan Hawke narrates, and he's brilliant. HA HA HOOOOO!
