What Members Thought

In 2009 I heard Candace Fleming say--I think she was in the middle of writing this book--that the more she learned about Amelia Earhart, the less she admired her. I think that comes across in the book, though I don't know whether I would have noticed it or thought about it if I hadn't remembered her saying that. Earhart is a moderately interesting person, but not always for the reasons one might want. I thought it was especially clear that Fleming wasn't thrilled by Earhart carrying on with a ma

The suspense builds as the story alternates between telling the story of Earhart’s life and her disappearance over the Pacific Ocean. Find out how Earhart became a pilot, how she cultivated her public image, and how radio operators around the world tried to track her down after her plane went missing in this page-turner of a biography.
The format is key for the suspence, but the photographs help create a sense of familiarity and intimacy with this legend. Seeing her flaws and fibs brought to ligh ...more

we are on an Amelia kick at our house - Ellie just watched the movie and was fascinated. I also picked up a picture book at the bookfair for her. Didn't know about this, looks like it should be on our list!
This reads very much like Russel Friedman's 'The Photobiography of Abraham Lincoln.' I believe I like it just as much. I very much loved getting to know the truth behind the character 'Amelia Earhart'. From the good to the bad (not necessarily the best female flyer, but thanks to her publicity ...more

Excellent read. I did my 4th grade famous person report on her, and so I knew a little bit about her, but this was so well done. I learned more about her childhood and her married life. I liked how the information on her disappearance was thrown in after each chapter. I knew what had happened, but I still just wanted them to find her. I didn't know how many people had heard her radio in. Well done non-fiction. I would highly recommend this to anyone.

Fleming did a terrific job creating tension & suspense in her book by setting 1 chapter about the days when Amelia Earhart was missing against Earhart's biography. Great choice of info to share, wonderful photos, anecdotes from her life, and nothing sugar-coated about Earhart's quest for fame & how she became an icon. The book is not just about Amelia Earhart but also presents an intriguing picture of the US at the time (1930s) and of women & their power. The production quality of the book is ve

After reading about this on Heavy Medal blog, I wanted to see for myself if this book could live up to its hype. It so does!!! The pacing, the cliffhangers, the character development -- all great!

Excellent biographical information alternating with blow-by-blow account of Amelia's last hours. Best bio of the year so far.

Incredible. I love that Fleming looks into separating the facts and the legends of Amelia Earhart's life. I had NO CLUE what went on in the search for Earhart, so the missed connections and technical glitches blew my mind. Could you imagine if we had found her? Ahhh! I also loved the information on Amelia's younger life and school life.

I like the way the author brings interest and suspense by juxtaposing tidbits of Amelia's last day with the her life story. The pictures are great--the details of Amelia's life are interesting and exciting.

Non-fiction is not typically my thing, but I really enjoyed Fleming's exploration of Amelia Earhart's life and last flight. Earhart comes off as a very complex personality, both admirable and flawed. The interplay between the two alternating narratives works quite well to build tension, too. Revisiting this review to make predictions for SLJ's Battle of the Books 2012. While this is not my personal favorite, I think it has a distinct chance at going all the way.

Enjoyed this tremendously. And really, really loved the running drama of Amelia's disappearance threaded through. The whole book is beautifully done.
