I received an advanced reader's copy of Bless This Mouse by Lois Lowry back in early January. I am appalled at how long it has taken me to get to this wonderful book, but shortly after receiving the galley, I had two surgeries. The galley got pushed aside in all the recovery and follow up.

Summary: Bless This Mouse tells the story of a group of church mice, led by Mouse Mistress Hildegarde and their efforts to avoid The Big X. Hildegarde is responsible for keeping all 200 plus mice who live at St

Hildegarde is the Mouse Mistress of St. Bartholemew's and it's a BIG job; she is charged with the mission of protecting 219 church mice! When multiple mice are sighted around the church, Father Murphy calls the exterminator and Hildegarde organizes a mass exodus to ensure the mice community's safety and security. Her plan works, but then the mice must figure out how to avoid all the traps which are made of glue and mean certain death by starvation if they are caught. Again Hildegarde comes up wi ...more

Mouse Mistress Hildegarde is concerned with her mice charges that live in the church. Some of them are simply having too many litters too often, and others have become careless about hiding when humans are around. Because of the fact that some of the parishioners have sighted mice at various times, she knows that soon an exterminator will arrive to get rid of them. The mice move outside for awhile so that none of them will be killed, and then move back in just in time for the Blessing of the Ani ...more

The churchfolk think one or two mice live in their church, but the population has now grown to over 200. It takes a well-organized mouse to keep charge of such a community, and Mouse Mistress Hildegarde is just such a mouse. Ruling with great efficiency she is able to keep their existence a secret until some unruly baby mice alert the church to believe that maybe they have a bigger problem than they thought. What will the colony do now that the Great X is about to happen? Will Mouse Mistress Hil ...more

good story. Hildegarde is Mouse Mistress and has the job of keeping the mice in the church safe. This requires cooperation on the part of the mice and some yelling at mice to stop reproducing! Lucretia thinks she would be a better Mouse Mistress and tries to undermine Hildegarde. When the Great X (exterminator) comes the mice need to be brave; they cleverly thwart the Great X, and Lucretia gets her comeuppance.

The language of this book, while appropriate to the story, would make this a better read aloud for younger students. I tend to not be a big fan of talking mice or well any animals - but this is a sweet story and many children tend to like animal stories.

a sweet book about a group of church mice facing several grave problems (at least in the world of mice). i thought throughout reading this story about recommending it to the librarian at my son's Catholic school, given the setting and the many references (St. Francis, blessing of the pets). nicely done illustrations. ...more

Cute ending - I have a hard time getting into books with animals as the main characters

Really enjoyed this book. Church mice confronting threats of exterminators and the Blessing of the Animals is a really cute and unique plot. This book would be fun to read aloud as a family.

What a sweet, sweet story. The audio version was wonderful with many great mousy voices.
There is a lot of harder vocabulary in this short, sweet read, perhaps making it a better read aloud. A lot of vocabulary is connected to Christian church terms, practices, and traditions - readers may need support with this.

Hildegarde has a thankless job keeping the mice of Saint Bartholemew’s safe – from parishioners, cats, and the Great X – but fortunately she discovers true friends as the mice dodge each danger. With appealing illustrations and plenty of humor, this story is meant for young animal lovers.

I read this by audio CD--very well done! I enjoyed this book much more than I expected! The mice characters were so well delineated. I just think of this as a precious book--just a perfect read for young chapter book readers love animals and tend to personify them.

This was a sweet chapter book about church mice. It was kind of fun because I was reading it within a week of reading about the churches in our community that celebrate Blessing of Beasts as depicted in the book. We have several that do that around here.
