I had hoped that this would be my final read of 2012 - but I ended up finishing it this morning. A wonderful first read of 2013!

Filled with symbolism, Son brings together themes and characters from the previous novels of The Giver Quartet in a powerful and thought-provoking way. I'm contemplating the nature of good and evil, and I'm thinking about spiritual gifts. I'm also experiencing the healing of community and the power of love - and considering the social and political implications of it al

It's been years since I read The Giver, and I never read Gathering Blue or The Messenger, so I was planning to read them all before reading Son, but a co-worker lent me her ARC and I decided to go ahead and give it a try. I'm so glad I did! Son is amazing, beautiful and totally engrossing. It's broken into three parts which are really almost like three separate stories, though the story builds on itself and comes together in the last part.
Claire is a Birthmother in the same community that Jonas

I near-loved this book, though I'm doubtful about how much it will mean to young teenagers, the purported audience. Why not an adult novel as sequel to a young adult novel, along the lines of, say, Madeleine L'Engle? (ish?) But anyway, that's not how it works, and maybe they will still like it. I wasn't particularly engaged by the second book and am not sure whether I even tried to read the third; if this describes you, you may still like this one. The backstory, that Lois Lowry wrote this (as I ...more

Wow. Loaded with symbolism and allegory. Full of hope.

This was an amazing sequel to The Giver. I am so glad that Ms. Lowry decided to write the book to let us see the end of Jonas and Gabriel's story. I LOVED it. ...more

Perhaps it's because this hit a more personal note than the previous companions/sequels, but I felt like this was an improvement over Gathering Blue and Messenger. I loved having a different view of the community that Jonas (and Claire) came from, especially all the little nods to things that major rereaders of The Giver would remember. When Claire felt apprehensive, I had an immediate flashback to the opening lines of The Giver, for example.

The structure is interesting - first we follow Claire

This isn't a bad book, but I wish it had never been written. It tries too hard to wrap things up I liked wondering what happened to Jonas and Gabe. This book takes away all of the ambiguity and magic from the ending of The Giver.

Also, I don't think this has the same audience as previous novels. This definitely appeals to adult readers. Much of the story is that of a mother searching for her lost son. Just because she is young when it starts doesn't make it a teen novel. Strange and somewhat disa

What a wonderful conclusion to this beloved series. A new character, Claire, begins with her own story and journey, connected to the original community in which we meet Jonas and Gabe. We feel her longing for the son she is not allowed to raise, and her determination to find him...a very rich book that could stand alone, but one that is deeply satisfying to those who've read the previous books. I want to re-read them! Thank you, Lois Lowry!

I finally finished this series, after reading The Giver many years ago. This book did a good job of tying together the previous 3 books. I liked the character development, but it was not a page turner for me. The end resolved very quickly. 3.5 stars

Twenty years ago when I read THE GIVER, I agonized over the ending. This book brings together all of the pieces. We learn what happened to Jonas, Gabe, and find out all about Gabe's birth mother. It might have been better to continue wondering.... ...more

A bit long but a fairly satisfying conclusion to The Giver Quartet.

An intriguing alternate viewpoint for the story of The Giver. Not a lot of surprises, and not as meaty for discussion as the original book, but it would be great to read after the discussion to see what questions it might answer. ...more

Loved it! It took me a second to figure out the connections to the other three in the series, but once I did, it was easy to follow. I loved the story, and I really feel like I got some good answers. Well done.
