What Members Thought

I guess I have to explain myself after everyone I know has raved about this book. Initially I was loving it, but the ending didn't work for me. And after I finished it, I realized that while it was cute and quirky, it tried a bit too hard to be cute and quirky. Whatever it was that bothered me, it didn't get resolved and so I'm thinking this one is just OK.

I read and listened to Flora and Ulysses. Of all the quirky characters that populate this novel, Dr. Meescham is my favorite. The "illuminations" added to my enjoyment of the novel. Perhaps the overly-affected narration on the audio version colored my views. ...more

"Holy Bagumba!" I loved this book. William Spiver, Flora Belle, Ulysses and ALL the secondary characters are simply fabulous. I adore the language that Dicamillo uses, as she never talks down to her readers.
Like Flora Bell, I'm a bit of a cynic. This, however, was my favorite by this author...and that's saying a lot. It might be a quirky tale about a girl and a superhero squirrel, but it's also a story says about life, family, and love - and it's filled with wonderful quotes! ...more

This is the most Kate DiCamillo-ish book ever. Quirky, adorable, funny, and unexpected. It's about a squirrel who gets sucked into a vacuum cleaner and turns into a superhero! What?! Highly recommended for lovers of weirdness, challenging vocabulary, comics, and (of course) Kate DiCamillo.
And now this has won the 2014 Newbery Medal! I'm surprised because it relies quite a bit on the illustrations, but I'm not surprised at all that Kate DiCamillo has another award to add to her collection. It's ...more

Grades 4-6. (RL 520-- but I thought the vocabulary was much more difficult than this!!)Newbery winner 2014. Flora forms a strong bod with a squirrel (Ulysses) after rescuing him from the bowels of a vacuum cleaner. Until then she'd just been getting by. Her parents recent divorce has left her lonely because her mother buries herself in her writing. Her father visits on weekends. And in the same manner that Winn-Dixie changed her owner's life, Ulysses brings Flora new friends and awakens life aro

I read this book to prep for the Mock Newberys. I enjoyed it, but I wondered if kids will. I don't think that Kate DiCamillo will win this year, but I will definitely include this book in my resources when I do P.D. on vocabulary instruction.

I'm generally not a fan of books in which all the grown ups are made out to be idiots, but I did like the can-do attitude of the main character, Flora. Sometimes our superpower is to keep on going after being hurt by those we love.

A wonderfully quirky story about a girl and her superhero squirrel from one of my favorite children's writers.
