I really wish that, instead of a 229-page novel for 2nd graders, Henkes had written four 70-page novellas for 2nd graders. Seriously.
Newbery update: I actually had a dream last night that Billy Miller won the Newbery Medal and I was so disappointed. Turns out, it won an Honor, and I'm not so disappointed. It's nice for the Newbery committee to recognize a book for younger readers, even if I still believe this is really four books crammed into one too-long book. Can you come of age as a second grader? Yes -- in small but meaningful ways. Kevin Henkes captures a perfect handful of them in this heartwarming and utterly wonderful book about a boy named Billy Miller who has normal kid worries as he starts (and, some months later, ends) his second grade year. A very sweet story of a boy's 2nd grade year. One of those rare books where a kid is surrounded by a loving family and caring teachers and the worst situations he deals with are thinking his teacher may have misunderstood him, being afraid of the dark and a girl in his class who makes fun of him from time to time.

I really enjoyed The Year of Billy Miller. Would make a great read aloud in a 2nd or 3rd grade classroom and a book that would be interesting, but support some intermediate readers. Great message.

Audio version -
I didn't instantly love the narrator, but his style grew on me. And he really let the simple beauty of the story shine through.
The lead in and exit music was oddly dated, but it didn't seem to bother The Bud. He was dancing to it in the rearview mirror at the end - so what do I know.

Perfect for readers transitioning to chapter books. Sympathetic, interesting adult characters. Billy is spot on. Unique format with Billy focusing on a member of his family in individual sections.
Loved the ending the best-importance of family and celebrating differences.
Such a sweet story. This would be a great read aloud all year long.
