Chernoff's... On the left were the goateed Trotskyites planning the downfall of capitalism and on the right were the sideburned tsarist distaff dwelling in dreams of the Hermitage. Like all the rest of the world's warring tribes, these two made their way to New York City and settled side by side. They dwelt in the same neighborhoods and the same narrow cafés, where they could keep a watchful eye on one another. In such close proximity, time slowly strengthened their sentiments while diluting the ...more

Liked this very much except for the pretentious lack of quotation marks.

I get a little hesitant about giving a book 5 stars, because I always think for just a second "It's no To Kill a Mockingbird" - and nothing could be, of course, but this book was really good.

It starts out with the author describing a show of Walker Evans photographs of strangers in NYC that he took surreptitiously. Katie Kontent, our main character spots her old friend Tinker Grey in some of them. And the story goes back in time to tell about how she met him and all of that.

This is one of the only contemporary books I've read in a long time. I couldn't put this book down, and flew through the 300 pages in a just a few nights. Well composed; I love how the plot unfolded. The way Manhattan is described is just beautiful, it almost is a character on its own.

The story is set in 1938, but is told from the narrator looking back upon that time. I normally am not a fan of that type of narration device, but it works well in this case. If you pick it up for the period piece

This book feels like it was written about 50 years ago and seems like it should be a classic, even though it just came out in the last year. It had great characters and was a delightful read. Even the minor characters of the story were three-dimensional. I really enjoyed reading it. I did not expect some of the twists and turns. Kate was a pretty interesting character, as well as Tinker. Reall, I liked them all!

Bravo! Bravo! Bravo! When I started this novel I thought I was in for a pleasant read with all the trappings of a great period piece. A story filled with 1930s New York with some glitz and glam and social intrigue. Yes and No. Yes, there is that aspect to this debut but there is so much more to this novel and the writing is superb. I highly, highly recommend.
