There was a pile of books...and when I picked this one out from it, I was totally and utterly delighted. A quiet, fantastical journey through a variety of lovely (and unusual) collective nouns, There Is a Tribe of Kids is a creative triumph. One lone boy finds himself in various groups of animals, rejoicing briefly in their antics until he is left behind for the next group--some encounters are silly, some are a little scary, and some are just plain beautiful. Luscious illustrations paired with whimsical, succinct story telling make for a delightful picture book. Lane's use of interesting collective nouns (crash of rhinos, unkindness of ravens) gives direction to the story and inspires lesson ideas. I can't wait to read it again to look longer at the detailed illustrations. I can't wait to share it with a tribe of kids! ...more

I would have liked end notes, and also maybe illustrated endpapers.

May 2016 - Ben has chosen this a few times now, and each time I enjoy the story more. At first glance it's just a series of collective nouns, and the text is so brief, but there's a lot to talk about as you share the book. I love the way the ending mirrors the beginning, and a lot of the words are delicious and unusual. I particularly love the caterpillar page.

A minor quibble, because I think this one shows some Caldecott potential, is that the paper feels cheap and thin - I feel like a higher q

We follow a child who makes friends with various groups of animals and encounters various natural groupings,while the reader is told what the groups are called.
