12/13/2017 ~~ Magical realism, anybody? This is a story of being lost, journeying (perhaps toward home?), making new connections, and finding hope. It's also a story of family - when family includes people, animals, musical instruments, and music. I'll be curious to read this with students to hear their reactions. Will Captain Alfred make it home?

Why I read this book: It's been floated as a potential 2018 Caldecott. There are certainly illustrative elements that push the boundaries and contribut

A storm capsizes a boat. It seems like the only survivor is a duck egg that hatched inside an open violin case. When the ducking spies a floating violin he swims towards it and imprints. What follows is a series of magical, musical events.
The art in this one is bloody gorgeous! It’s so brilliant that after being immersed in the imagery of the storm, it was hard to return to the story and accept that anything or any living being could survive.

Captain Alfred brings home an egg that's just about ready to hatch, but when a fierce storm flings the egg inside a fiddle case out to sea the duckling hatches all alone and very lost. Spying a strange object floating not too far away from him, the duckling makes his way over to the captain's fiddle and plays music that helps bring long lost loved ones together and make his way home.

Acrylic paint, ink, charcoal, and graphite illustrations.

The storytelling is top-notch and the ending is satisfyin

A found fiddle has an almost magical effect on a duckling and his nearby friends. The illustrations are fantastic - same man who illustrated The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo

Really enjoyed this book. Cute story-only slightly predictable. Great illustrations. Gotta love a book written and illustrated by the same person.

Really delightful.

January 2018 - Ben was really interested in this one, and I'd like to read it a few more times to really take in all the details. Update - we've read it a LOT and Ben loves it. He especially notices the expressions on the duckling's face and the small moments of humor, but also the storm - he always stops to talk about how the lightning looks like rips in the page. ...more

Alfred Fiddleduckling is one of the warmest, sweetest, most uplifting picture books I've read in a while. I loved the way the illustrations caught the movement and energy of the story and I adored Alfred Fiddleduckling. This will make a perfect read aloud. ...more

I liked the story and how everything came together at the end. I also liked the illustrations in acrylic paint with ink, charcoal, and graphite. I also liked the binding, with the spine that looks like fabric sewn to the cover boards.
