A wonderfully beautiful and relatable picture book biography about Sophie Germain, a young girl who loved math. Despite her family's objections, she became a self-taught mathematician who because the first woman awarded a grand prize from the Royal Academy of Sciences by determining the formula for vibrations moving objects. This formula was the start of being able to build bridges and tall building. This book would be a great read aloud.

Another great STEM picture book with a lot of "meat" to the story! Sophie's mind thought about math all the time, even when the odds were against her. She grew up during the French and the ducation of girls was not considered appropriate, and even though her parents tried to discourage her, she was relentless. She went on to solve what the Academy of Science considered unsolvable--predicting the patterns of vibration. Barbara McClintock's illustrations are exceptional.

Rounded up because I liked Sophie's persistence. However, math is not my subject and I didn't feel a closeness to Sophie.

Fascinating story of Sophie Germain, a mathematician when women didn't get that opportunity.
