This was a huge hit with a shy, reluctant reader and he brought this to the Library's Read to a Dog program and read it to every dog.

Points of awesomeness:
- It's a reader that looks like a big-kid book!;
- Features controlled vocabulary, repeating, beginning-reader text;
- Includes sophisticated puzzle-picture references at the beginning of each new chapter's mystery (the decor in baby monkey's office changes to reflect the new theme, be it circus or opera), which will appeal to older readers;
- Has a playful slapstick motif for all ages: Baby Monkey trying to put on pants;

My favorite attribute was the way the details in his office changed and the "key" in the back. I thought the index and bibliography were sort of ridiculous. As a librarian, I am constantly pointing students to the nonfiction text features that help them find the information they need. This tongue-in-cheek addition was funny for me, but would confuse the readers that this book is intended for.

I read this a few days ago and didn’t see the appeal In it. My 3-1/2 year old daughter noticed it and asked me to read it to her tonight. Wow, what a totally different experience it was reading it together. We laughed and laughed together, and she wanted to read it again right away. I’m glad she asked to read it and I gave it a second chance.

I always love Brian Selznick's artwork.

I would give this book 3.5 stars because I honestly can't decide how I feel about it. I adore Brian Selznick and his illustrations but I also found the book a little strange. It would be really fun for a preschooler/kindergartener who would definitely "get" and appreciate the humor!

May 2018 - I read this once to Ben, and then he basically 'read' it back to me, remembering most of the repeated phrases and cracking up over all the pages where Baby Monkey tries to put on his pants.
