I adored this author's earlier Green, and I have to say that this one just might be better. It packs an emotional wallop as each page traces the relationship between a boy and his dog. Starting with the blue of a baby blanket and ending with a couple of new friends frolicking along the beach, the author uses die-cuts to reveal great depths of emotion. An utterly perfect follow-up to Green and everything you would except from someone as brilliant as Seeger, who expertly weaves together a really beautiful story of loyalty, friendship, and loss using only shades of blue in both text and illustration. I hope she continues to write a book for each color in the rainbow, and I have my fingers-crossed for this winning the 2019 Caldecott.

Lovely story about a boy and his dog that lasts the dog's lifetime. Smart play with the color of blue--not just with objects, but also with emotion.

December 2018 - I admire Seeger's color-themed books, but they don't really work as stories for me. Beautiful to look at, though.
