Oh, I like this one. An old salty sailor retires only to find that an adorable little girl and her grandmother have moved in next door. The illustrations are DISTINGUISHED! The book offers opportunity to discussion and word play. You can't miss with this one.

The sea plays an integral part in helping an old retired sea captain become friends with his new young neighbor.
Maybe more of a 3.5, but I loved the sea as a character.

I really and truly feel in love with everything about this book. I love the main characters and watching how they learn to reach out to other is such a joy. Everything about his book is delightful...the writing, the gorgeous illustrations, and the beautiful message of love and acceptance. It is going on my personal bookshelf as soon as possible!

A salty, old, curmudgeonly sailor looks forward to a quiet retirement by the sea until a little girl and her mom move next door, which greatly displeases him. He leaves messages for the girl in the sand, but as the ocean is wont to do, the messages get altered, leading the young girl to think old Swashby is telling her to do something else...
