I have been wanting to read Penelope Ward for a while now, I finally picked up RoomHate and wow, I was completely blown away. This book was one hell of an emotional roller coaster, once I started, I couldn't put it down. I completely fell in love with the character. Each turn of the page brought more drama and excitement. I loved Justin and Amelia's characters, I really felt there's a lot of women in the world who can relate to Amelia's situation. And of course Justin has just became my new book ...more

What did it really mean to be childhood friends?

It meant knowing each other during that awkward, confusing period when they were transitioning from children to adults. It meant knowing things about each other and having petnames or private jokes that will probably not make sense to others. They can remind you of lessons you learned from mistakes you’ve made and experiences you’ve had that you may have forgotten as time passed by.

It meant knowing each other during that awkward, confusing period when they were transitioning from children to adults. It meant knowing things about each other and having petnames or private jokes that will probably not make sense to others. They can remind you of lessons you learned from mistakes you’ve made and experiences you’ve had that you may have forgotten as time passed by.

Amelia and Justin were exactly that way, at least at one point in their lives. They used to be the best of friends. Neighbors since they were ten years old, they had a history that was hard to ignore. They had deep-rooted concern for each other that wouldn't go away despite time and distance.

They inherited a house together and naturally, they ended up seeing each other again after almost a decade. Justin arrived with his girlfriend in tow, who was a broadway actress. What else can we expect except a nasty, superficial and annoying girlfriend determined to make Amelia's life a living hell, right? Well, the author didn't give us the stereotype character. Instead, she was nice, friendly and genuine.

Right from the start, Amelia's feelings for Justin was clear. Justin, on the other hand, was just so angry at her or at least wanting to hate her that I didn't like how he treated her in the beginning, yet somehow I knew there was deep pain behind the attitude and resentments.

This was a story about childhood friends who were each other's rocks but circumstances got in the way and they grew apart, misunderstanding and immaturity contributed to the downfall of their friendship.

There are so many friends-to-lovers story where the characters said they didn't want to ruin the friendship by jumping into a more intimate relationship, but Amelia and Justin proved that notion with their actions. They lived it. They truly cherished being given the chance to be friends again. Unlike in other stories, they were honest with their feelings but decided to choose the safe cocoon of their friendship. It was a beautiful journey of two people learning how to accept and love each other through all the changes in their lives, being there for each other and unconsciously making adjustments to allow them to fit in each other's lives. It was a heartwarming story of how love can gradually realign your priorities and alter your beliefs. It was about making memories and making them count. It was about discovering the reason they chose to make those memories together.

The story showed the evolution of the roles they played in each other's lives. What I liked most about their story was that nothing was forced, no decision was made in haste or in the heat of the moment, no compromises were made just to appease the other or to get what they wanted. Everything came naturally for them, in their own perfect time.

“It’s always when you want time to stand still, it flies the fastest.” This book had very detailed character development. It took a different turn than I was thinking as far as emotions but still a great book. The writing was repetitive and choppy at times but the story still flowed. And I loved the idea that someone is always there for you. It definitely wasn’t a waste of time.
