In his place is the shell of a man with murder under his belt. Any emotion he once had was left under the gavel when he was given life in prison. Putting your hands on a prison employee will get you the hole, but some things are worth their punishment, and something tells him Lyla will be worth more than he bargained for.

Lyla Evans isn’t sure about her new job at a maximum security prison, but showing uncertainty and weakness isn’t an option. Taking care of murderers and rapists isn’t ideal, but survival is key. She’s warned ahead of time about a prisoner named X, but when she’s attacked, it’s the dangerous X that saves her. Fraternizing with the prisoners is forbidden, but sometimes the most forbidden things are the sweetest.

I did not expect this book to leave me with a sob fest.

I can normally sniff out a tear-Jerker, I avoid them until I need one, Just goes to show they are not always evident from a pretty blurb or behind and pretty cover.

I thought the story of Christopher Jacobs, aka X and Lyla Evans was going to be bitter-sweet and I couldn't have been more wrong.

This story is gritty right from the very beginning when a young Christoper Jacobs finds himself in a room with his girlfriend and his friend covered I did not expect this book to leave me with a sob fest.

I thought the story of Christopher Jacobs, aka X and Lyla Evans was going to be bitter-sweet and I couldn't have been more wrong.

This story is gritty right from the very beginning when a young Christoper Jacobs finds himself in a room with his girlfriend and his friend covered in blood, dismembered bodies and a blood fest and he has no recollection of how they were murdered or why he was still alive. Christopher Jacobs is arrested and sent to prison for murder, caught at the scene, covered in blood with all evidence pointing in his direction.

The story picks up 10 years later when Lyla begins her job at the prison, straight out of medical school and in need of money she had no choice but to accept the position as a nurse even if it would be the last place her deceased father who was a police officer would want her to be.

X has a reputation for getting into trouble, his size, his lack of communication and participation with the other inmates make him a target and they all want to be on top.
X is a mountain of a man compared to the gangly teen who first went into prison.

Lyla see's X regular, he's a frequent visitor to the medical room and even though Lyla should be afraid of X she see's something more. A relationship develops between the two secretly and then Layla becomes endangered when she starts poking around in X's case. The prison is corrupt, the governor is corrupt and there's and whole lot of angst.

I was intrigued, I was captivated with the plot and the characters, Slammer had it's hot moment's too and I could not put this book down. It was completely unpredictable, the twists I never saw coming and I completely applaud the author for going along with the characters lead although it broke my heart.

I was a murderer, at least allegedly. A filthy criminal who had no right to touch her sweetness or taste her thick desire, but fuck it. People took things they didn’t deserve all the time. Why should I deny myself when no one else ever did?

An unforgettable dark and gritty story that I enjoyed. *Contains scenes of rape and bloodshed. AVAILABLE IN KU

OH MY GOD

That ending sent chills all the way up my spine. It’s haunting. Chilling. Sad. This book will steamroll all over your emotions.
