[close] At 400+ pages, American Gods has been touted to be one of Gaiman's flagships. It doesn't disappoint in content. Once you get into the meat of this book it becomes quickly apparent how many days (months, years?) he's put into its research. Although I generally enjoyed it, I found that it lacks the sheer magic and awe of some of his other works such as his recent "Ocean at the End of the Lane." If you're a Gaiman fan, have a bit of a gothic lean, and can appreciate anachronistic witticisms that arc on for pages before becoming relevant, this is the book for you. (Exec. Paige, "Exec. Decent book. In the end, I'm more impressed with Gaiman's research for this book than anything. The main character didn't feel believable as a "clever thug," or perhaps I just couldn't identify with them. Still, Gaiman's cleverness shines through, and that with the impressive research gets it a 4/5 in my book. ...more
