Well, at last a female has actually captured Bobby's notice. The book starts with Bobby being told that a manor house is currently a place where gambling and pornographic films are being played, and that an old acquaintance would like him to investigate. He is asked to accompany his friend the following day, but Bobby being the inquisitive person he is, sees no reason to wait for his friend and sets off to take a look at the Manor House. Bobby Owen finds himself investigating a murder that forms part of an international political intrigue with a number of suspects, but unexpected motives. The more interesting element of this book is the extent to which the author in 1938 foresaw the rise and implications of authoritarianism in Europe. More a thriller than mystery and Bobby finally meets the woman of his dreams, although he first has to proof her innocence of murder.

Bobby still stands out for his perseverance when doing his duty, and Punshon's humor retains its subtle digs. "They also serve who only stand and wait." ...more

Meh

This latest in the series was not up to standard, in my opinion. Still, it was interesting that Bobby fell in love.
