Really quite excellent for a first novel. Lilac Girls is, in fact,based on a true story with two very real women (Caroline Ferriday and Herta Oberheuser) and others (Kasia and Zusanna Kuzmerick) who are loosely based on real women, the Ravensbruck "Rabbits". It's a story of war and love and loss, sisters and mothers and families, strength and courage and healing. Not perfect, but highly recommended. ...more

Another good Holocaust read. Some of the Ravensbruck parts were hard to take, but I understand that that was realistic. I liked all the characters- even the German doctor- and it was a read I highly recommend.
I was fascinated with the outcome of Poland after the war. I should have known the results, but never thought of it before.

This book taught me a lot about Poland during World War II. The author does a good job weaving the story of three women involved in different parts of the war. I can't say I enjoyed reading this novel (even though I couldn't put it down), because it is uncomfortable, but I'm glad I read it. Family B.C.
