The three main characters in this novel take turns telling the story from their individual points of view. Mary Queen of Scots has sought refuge in England, and is placed in house arrest at the home of Lord Shrewsbury (George) and his wife (who would later be known as Bess of Hardwick). Of the three, Bess is by far the most interesting to me, and I look forward to reading more about her.

Having just left Sarum and the individual narratives that made up that historical framework I was a bit let-down when I saw that this was similar in style. I personally am not a big fan of the changing viewpoint from the perspective of the three main characters: Mary, Bess and George.The one character that I did find somewhat interesting was Bess - rare to find such a seemingly strong person in charge of their own finances during that time period. A compelling look at the years Mary spent as a royal prisoner, told by her "jailers", Bess and George and by Mary herself. This novel overcame being written in first person and present tense, two styles I generally avoid, by drawing me into the relationships of three people thrown together by Elizabeth. ...more

Halfway through the book, and I'm so bored that I keep thinking: "Oh just behead her already! So this book can end!!" I keep reading because I keep hoping it'll get better. I just don't care about any of the main three characters. ...more
