What Members Thought
I spent most of this book trying to decide if I liked it or not. The writing is great and there are some beautiful and heartbreaking lines of prose. The author has a lot of insight into what makes people tick (or not) and yet, the characters were so unlikeable most of the time. Maybe they were too real? I guess I need heroes and heroines for which to root, and for a Fantasy novel there was as surprising lack of them here. Still, the book did get more interesting towards the end when the action p

I read this years ago and didn't like it. The fact that I didn't like it was pretty much the only thing I remember from that first reading. I gave it another read recently for a book club and found I liked it much better the second time around. I didn't really like any of the characters but that didn't stop me from enjoying it this time. Maybe going in with low expectations was the key to liking it. I didn't want to continue with the trilogy the first time I read this but now I do.

Wanted to like this book but couldn’t like most of the characters, especially the main narrator. Some funny bits and did like the references and allusions to other fantasy books and series. Little but too over the top with language and graphic descriptions.
