This book is just too split to love, at least for me. About half of the essays are critiques of film, television, contemporary fiction, and even one art exhibit. Sometimes these opinion pieces tie into Roxane Gay's thoughts on racism and sexism, which aligns them thematically with the rest, and thereby, I suppose, makes them something more than filler.
