Guess it was ok? Heartless is a retelling of the story of Alice in Wonderland’s villain, The Queen of Hearts and how she came to be that way –mad and a killer. To be fair, I must say I am not a fan of the original story of Alice in Wonderland. I read it a couple of years ago and it was, also ok. Well, not ok: I did not like it, it was too crazy for me. Guess it was ok? Heartless is a retelling of the story of Alice in Wonderland’s villain, The Queen of Hearts and how she came to be that way –mad and a killer. To be fair, I must say I am not a fan of the original story of Alice in Wonderland. I read it a couple of years ago and it was, also ok. Well, not ok: I did not like it, it was too crazy for me. So, why did I go into this book? I guess because I am always attracted to retellings, particularly those centered on well-known villains. While Heartless has an interesting premise, and I found it more digestible and coherent than the original Alice’s story, I fell the plot was fine but nothing that really made me feel at the edge of my seat. Catherine –who is to become the Queen of Hearts– is a young girl belonging to royalty and her dream is to become the most famous baker. However, her parents intend to marry her to the king and are not interested in respecting her desires. Catherine then meets Jest, the court Joker, and they fall in love. But that is not meant to be, and though both try to be together and pursue their dreams, tragedy strikes… and that is how Catherine changes from a free, lovely girl to a crazy woman. And that’s it. As said, I think the story was fine and at least it was not boring, but I found there was no real thrill to the plot, which can be summarized as a woman who goes mad and on a killing rampage after losing her loved one… and that was it.

Bueno, supongo que la historia estuvo bien. O regular. Sin corazón de Marissa Meyer es un retelling del origen de la villana de Alicia en el País de las Maravillas, la Reina de Corazones, y cómo se convirtió en el personaje malvado y loco que conocemos. Para ser justa, debo decir que no soy fan de la historia original de Alicia (¡sacrilegio!) La leí hace un par de años y sentí que no era un libro para mí –demasiado loco y exótico para mi gusto. Entonces, ¿por qué me animé a leer este libro? Creo que es porque me agrada la idea de estos famosos retellings o historias alternativas que explican el origen de villanos en la historia de la literatura. Y si bien esta novela tiene una trama interesante, que me pareció mucho más digerible y coherente que la historia de Alicia, no hubo nada que me hiciera apasionarme o sorprenderme con la narración. Catherine, quien será la reina de corazones, es una joven que pertenece a la realeza y su sueño es convertirse en una repostera famosa. Sin embargo, sus padres, marqueses, pretenden casarla con el rey y no está interesados en sus deseos. Catherine conoce a Jest, el bufón de la corte y se enamoran al tiempo que él le revela que tiene una misión secreta y mágica –está en búsqueda de su corazón para terminar una guerra en otra tierra. A pesar de intentarlo, llega una tragedia que separa a los jóvenes y es así como Catherine cambia de una joven valiente e independiente a una mujer trastornada que quiere cortarles la cabeza a todos. Y eso es todo. Como mencioné, creo que la historia está bien y por lo menos no me pareció aburrida, pero no sentí que hubiera algo emocionante o innovador en la trama, la cual puede resumirse como la historia de una mujer que pierde al amor de su vida y por ello enloquece y comienza a actuar de manera arbitraria. Esta historia es ligera y entretenida, es el primer libro que me leo de Marissa Meyer y me ha dejado con ganas de leer más de sus retelling en especial por se mantuvo fiel con la personalidad culminante de nuestra emblemática Reina de Corazones.

Ame el final y la manera en como la dulce protagonista se va transformando poco a poco en la reina que conocemos hoy en día; el sentido y la ironía de porque lleva el nombre de Reina de "Corazones" y esa frase que tanto amamos: "CORTENLE LA CABEZA".

Catherine es la protagonista de este libro. Vive en el reino de Corazones y pertenece a la aristocracia, le encanta hornear pasteles y tiene una buena relación con todo el mundo, incluyendo al Rey.

Ella es quien está destinada a convertirse en la Reina de Corazones de Alicia en el País de las Maravillas (de Lewis Carroll), y esta novela cuenta la historia de qué hechos la llevaron a convertirse en la figura que conocimos de Carroll.

this book was just meh, it didn't call me back, I didn't want to come back into the world, I could have finished this like 2 or 3 days ago because I had like 20% of the audiobook left but ugh, I just could not.
I wanted to love this, I adore Marissa Meyer and the queen of hearts but it was just a love story, I expected so much more. I didn't connect either with Cath or Jest, I just loved the cat. ...more
