“There is always another side, always.”
I read Jane Eyre for the first time last year (2017) and it became one of my favorite books of all times. Brontë’s novel was, in my opinion, exquisitely built, including the dark, gloomy, sad atmosphere and the characters, which had a degree of complexity that made them very human. I heard about this book a long time ago but I wasn't aware of the topic and when I found out I decided to read it for my Book Riot challenge.
Favorite part: I love the way this book gives a voice to Antoinette "Bertha" Mason Cosway Rochester because on Jane Eyre it was such a flat character with only one dimension: madness. Jean Rhys shows us a rewriting of one of the most enigmatic characters in Jane Eyre, Bertha Mason, the first wife of Mr. Rochester. But, first of all, we have to consider that her real name is Antoinette Cosway, and that the other name is how Rochester decided to call her, as a way of undermining her as an individual. She is double marginalised as a woman, and as a half-breed. All of her family is bad-treated even by the negro population of Jamaica. They do not fit anywhere.
