I honestly do not know how to feel about this book. To be fair, I had not read Christie until very recently, starting last year, with Murder in the Orient Express and And then there were none . I enjoyed both books though I recognized that, maybe because thrillers and crime novels have progressed so much in terms of narrative and plots (and that I am very obsessed with TV shows of this nature), I find both books enjoyable but not that creepy. I enjoyed both books though I recognized that, maybe because thrillers and crime novels have progressed so much in terms of narrative and plots (and that I am very obsessed with TV shows of this nature), I find both books enjoyable but not that creepy. Anyway, Halloween Party was a very difficult book for me to read, because I felt many things distracted the reader from the plot. For one, I was expecting this to add some mystery details in the context of a Halloween party -the name of the book indicated so- but there’s nothing on it. In other words, don’t expect to see anything Halloween related on the story, except the fact that there was a kid’s Halloween Party. Second, the crime on itself, how it was solved, it was…meh. As the book progresses we start discovering several murders that have taken place in the community, and I must say the killer was certainly a psychopath and indeed the motives were creepy, but the execution was poor for me. There were certain chapters which I nearly skimmed through because I was so bored because the characters began thinking of other things -like how young people who need help are forgotten by the system and years after they start doing crazy things. Upon further research I understand this book was written on the late sixties and probably Christie wanted to reflect some of the concerns of those times, but it broke the narration. Also, I felt there were some xenophobic comments on it -I may be wrong but I felt there was some sort of contempt or despise against the au pair girl, Olga, or that in countries such as Greece as there is no law enforcement people can run off with money obtain by illegal means. In short, this book has some interesting bits and pieces but overall, I didn’t like it much.

Sinceramente, no sé cómo sentirme al respecto de este libro. Para ser justos, no había leído a Christie hasta hace muy poco, iniciando el año pasado, con Asesinato en el Expreso Oriente y Diez Negritos. Disfruté de ambos libros, aunque reconociendo que, tal vez porque los thrillers y las novelas policíacas han progresado tanto en términos de narrativa y tramas (y que estoy muy obsesionada con los programas de televisión de esta índole), las historias de Christie son agradables, pero no tan espeluznantes como esperaba. Volviendo a este libro, que en español se titula Las Manzanas, he de confesar que me pareció muy difícil terminarlo y en partes, aburrido. Creo que hay muchos elementos que distraen al lector de la trama principal. Para empezar, realmente esperaba que esta historia tuviera algunos elementos relacionados con Halloween, algo más de misterio, terror, pero no hay nada. En otras palabras, esta no es una historia sobre Halloween, sino sobre una fiesta en la que se comente un asesinato. En ese sentido, el crimen pudo realizarse en la fiesta de la primavera, en navidad… realmente no tiene nada que ver con la historia. En segundo lugar, el crimen, los motivos detrás de él, fueron más bien muy regulares, muy… normales. Conforme avanza la trama sabemos que se han cometido varios asesinatos en la comunidad y todo empieza a tener sentido, y debo reconocer que cuando se descubre al culpable -bueno, realmente era una persona enferma y algo psicópata, pero fuera de ello, la ejecución y la resolución de la historia fue muy pobre. Hubo capítulos que estuve a punto de saltarme porque me parecían lentos, aburridos, que divagaban en cosas que no tenían mucho que ver con el argumento principal. Por ejemplo, un tema muy recurrente y repetido es la critica a cómo en los últimos años se han dejado salir a jóvenes con ciertos problemas mentales quienes son potenciales criminales. Al investigar más entiendo que este libro se escribió a finales de los sesenta y es posible que Christie quisiera reflejar la preocupación de esos tiempos, pero para mí esto se volvió repetitivo y por ello le resto fuerza a la historia. Asimismo, sentí que había algunos comentarios xenófobos en la narración -y puedo equivocarme, pero, por ejemplo, sentí que había mucha crítica hacia Olga, la chica au pair que viene de un país de Europa del Este, o se refieren a Grecia como un país en donde la gente huye para gastar dinero conseguido con fines ilícitos. En resumen, este libro sí tiene algunos elementos rescatables, pero no es lo mejor de Agatha Christie y no fue de mis libros favoritos. ...more

Un caso más del infalible Poirot (aunque sin su inseparable Hastings, al que he añorado). Como siempre, un crimen, múltiples sospechosos, varios móviles posibles, muchos personajes secundarios....
Aunque creo que no es de los mejores libros de la autora, recomendable, como siempre.

Quizás no era el mejor momento para leer este libro, porque el caso es que no me ha enganchado nada. Normalmente las novelas de Agatha Christie te enganchan y haces que no puedas parar de leer, además de ser cortitas. Esta se me hizo larga, y me ha costado acabarla. Al final, ha sido por cabezonería, y me ha dado bastante igual quién fuera el asesino... El libro estaba como mal escrito, la mayoría de los diálogos no les encontré sentido. No ha sido un libro para mi.

Libro protagonizado por el policía retirado, Hércules Poirot, ya en sus años de jubilación, al que el forzoso retiro le trae por la calle de la amargura. Y he ahí que una antigua conocida, la escritora Ariadna Oliver, le viene con un caso que ni hecho a medida: una niña ha aparecido muerta, no hay testigos, no hay pruebas, y la única sospecha es algo que ha dicho la niña, una mentirosa consumada.

The Halloween Party.
En una fiesta de Halloween, alguien comete un crimen horrible, matan a una niña de 12 años. Por algo que dice una señora sospecha del homicidio y le habla a Poirot, que deberá descubrir quien es el asesino, y si ya ha asesinado antes.
Me dio risa como todo mundo diciendo “pero si aquí no hay asesinatos”, y tres renglones después, a si estas 3 personas murieron en asesinatos no esclarecidos, pero nada que ver.

Creo que pudo haber sido mejor. Demasiadas personas involucradas y el caso se explicó muy rápido al final. No ha sido mi mejor lectura de Agatha Christie.
