I really wanted to like this, but somehow couldn't manage it.
Everything bugged me, from the simplicity of interactions to the inconsistency of the language, the absurdity of the idea that cleaning a wall could rescue someone from blinding pain, and the reality that the final fix should have been blindingly obvious to at least a few Elantrian scholars. And the stock characters. I thought sword-wielding feminist princesses who convert the giggling women of the court was a teen YA staple, not an a ...more

A young princess arrives at her new country, expecting to meet her husband-to-be, its crown prince. Instead, she is informed of his recent demise.
However, the prince is not dead. He's been stricken by a horrible wasting disease. Tossed into the city of Elantris with the disease's other sufferers, he must survive in a lawless and leaderless environment.

This is the first Brandon Sanderson book I've read, and it made me want to read more! Raoden, Sarene and friends are so likeable, and Hrathen's character development was very believable. I really enjoyed the friendship between Raoden and Galladon, especially in exchanges like this:
Galladon: "You optimists just can't understand that a depressed person doesn't want you to try and cheer them up. It makes us sick."
Raoden: "Then let me say something true, my friend. I appreciate you...I value your he ...more

AWESOME!!!!! I listened to the Graphic Audio version and it was excellent. I got totally caught up in the book and was kinda freaked out toward the end-how was everything going to be tied up? It was kinda looking like everyone would die-would they? Aaaaaaah! It was just too thrilling!!!!

There are flashes of Sanderson's future brilliance, but this book is kind of a mess.
It's kind of frustrating, really. Sanderson's later books are just so good, and there are plenty of hints of that in Elantris. Crazy ending with insane reveals? Check. Religion has a major role? Check. Cool magic system? Check. And yet.

This was really good. Not my favorite by Sanderson, but still phenomenal and way better than most of the fantasy I've read recently. I loved the three main characters, especially Sarene. Raoden sort of annoyed me, but in a good way. The magic system was unique and the world building, while not as great as Mistborn, was still really good, especially for this being his first novel. One of my only complaints is that I felt that the ending was too perfect, and everything ended a little too nicely. I
