Ed and Al live in an alternate world where alchemy rules. After their mother dies, they study the science to learn how to bring her back (the ultimate taboo), but lose parts of themselves in the process. To regain their original bodies Ed becomes a dog of the military. He and Al learn a lot about alchemy, but in their studies and struggles to gain their original bodies back, they discover a terrible secret about their country. They fight with friends and allies to make their world right.
