An open polar sea is a concept that is unfathomable today yet that is what DeLong and the men on his ship the Jeannette were looking for in their travels. Instead they became stuck in ice for two years. During the time in which they were stuck they lived fairly well and had enough to eat although being stuck with the same people for two years in hardship conditions was claustrophobic to me.
