The story was interesting, but I was disappointed overall. I had high expectations of language and wordplay, and it really felt like a highly-sexed YA style--little sophistication. The protagonist annoyed the crap out of me, and thus made it hard for me to feel any sympathy for her plight. The information about the making of rugs was great, though, and reading about the colors and knots almost makes this a three starred books. This novel about a 17th century rug knotter in Iran is a first novel, which surprised me. Our heroine is rash, willful, occasionally stupid, loving, loyal, talented. By the end I was so invested in her life that I couldn't put the book down. I loved all the stories which helped further the action and I loved that Amirrezvani didn't give her protagonist a name, in honor of all the anonymous craftspersons in history.
