Part manifesto and part rallying call-to-arms to combat gender-based violence in the 21st century. Bates leaves no stone unturned and somehow manages to address nearly every intersection at every turn. Some who are more entrenched in the battle, may find it a bit basic - the more militant-minded might find it too centrist - however this book lays everything out on the table in order to point out: "THIS is what we're fighting against. When I picked up this book at the bookstore, I started reading the intro... and started weeping as I read. As I read, I alternated between tears, rage, and recognition, as Bates captured the very real struggles that women face in a patriarchal society. Discussing issues ranging from catcalling on the street to media representation of women to issues of intersectionality, Bates writes in an accessible, thoughtful style. I hadn't heard of this book before it was chosen for my work book club, but I am glad I read it. Even working in a field where sexism is discussed on an almost daily basis, it is astounding to me how rampant it is for women at every stage of life. We had a great discussion about the book in our meeting where this rampant sexism was highlighted -- almost everyone told a story about a time when they or someone close to them experienced it.

This book was amazing not because of how it was written, but because it provided a plethora of examples, statistics, and logical arguments about how sexism affects all of us.
