At first the premise--a plane full of teenage beauty pageant contestants crashes on a remote tropical island inhabited by nefarious people--but it quickly grew old. What could have been insightful parody turned into cheap shots and predictable snark. Boring. Couldn't finish it. ...more

Fun and funny, a silly feel-good feminist romp. A bit heavy handed with the politics and media parallels to our world, but I enjoyed it.

A delightful satire. Hilarious and touching. YA fiction at its best.

Grated on my nerves too much too even bother finishing.

Libba Bray reads the book herself and does a wonderful job. She gives each girl a distinctive voice and her delivery adds to the humor. She's a little too on the nose with some of the satire, but given the intended age group that might be necessary. I was also discouraged that half way through a book about teen girls' empowerment, a group of hot guys are also stranded on the island and it takes on a romance novel aspect. Otherwise would have been a 4-star. ...more

Every page had something to laugh out loud at. Bray totally skewers the tri-strangulation hold pop culture, Madison Avenue and the government have on young people. She sends up celebrities, politicians, reality TV, consumerism, AND has a grand time doing it. Beauty Queens is unapologetically over-the-top and shouts GIRL EMPOWERMENT. Enjoy!

This one is hard to review. I found the way it was written so irritating, that I'm not actually going to read the whole thing. On the other hand, it is hilarious satire. Without the commercial breaks and hunger-games-esque Corporation part to the plot, this could make a very, very funny movie. Would recommend for middle school girls. ...more

Listened to the audio book version, and if you don't mind the occasional silly accent (including (view spoiler)), you will love it as much as I did. ...more

Entertaining and off-beat in a Christopher Moore-esque way.
