What Members Thought

Fantasy is not my preferred genre, but this book was fantastic. This had the perfect balance of action, character development, and an interesting plot. Plus, I'm a sucker for strong female protagonists!

I came to this book about 10 years late and wonder if I would have enjoyed it more when it was first published, if it would have felt more "fresh."
As it was, I still enjoyed it -- it was well-written, with good characters and interesting worldbuilding, although the feminist angle felt a little heavy-handed at times, especially juxtaposed with the very "romance-y" writing. I even wondered if the epilogue was there just to squeeze in another sexy scene, but luckily there was more to it than that.

Slow start, but it's possible that's just from all the crazy-positive recommendations I'd received before I read it. Great adventure, rad characters. Can't wait to read the second book!

So good. I just love how intimately you get to know Katsa and Po and I can't wait until the next one comes out in October. 2009 August 9
Just reread this so I can start Bitterblue with the story fresh on my mind, and I loved it even more the second go round. I love Katsa's determination to stay independent, but still succumbing to the fact that she loves Po and in turn understanding that that love doesn't make her any less herself. 2012 October 29 ...more

Well-crafted fantasy adventure romance. The heroine is a gifted (graced) killer who refuses to conform to the expectations of her roles in her uncle's court. The hero is an emotionally intelligent (and very sexy) prince. Their adventure includes intrigue, kidnapping, murder, suspense, escapes through rugged landscapes, and self discovery. What more could a girl want?
