I love a good Appalachian setting. I just might prefer a Lee Smith or Barbara Kingsolver redeemably tragic story to one this filled with disaster. I really liked how it was told from different points of view and how the realities of *what really happened* unfolded from the varying perspectives. Some of it was sad and hard to read. A good'un but not my favorite.

This only made me want to read Winter's Bone, which I think I'll do now. It wasn't awful, but I found most of the characters pretty stock. Not one of them inspired my interest. There are moments of good writing here (which caused me to stretch my rating to two stars) but I just couldn't get into the story or the characters. And the shifting narrators work to muddle everything. Some characters are treated with great import in their narrative spaces and then pretty much dropped. I suppose in that

This book took a bit to get into but once I did, I was hooked. I will say that numerous terrible things happen, and I often felt queasy in the pit of my stomach in anticipation of the bad things that happen - aka this is not an uplifting read! I enjoyed how the author chose to tell the story of the Odom women.
