Okay, hear me out. This is SO not the kind of book I normally read. It's the kind of book my mother reads. You know the type I'm talking about: "Reviving Ophelia", "Not Without My Daughter"...mother-y books. It was, in fact, my mother who demanded I read this book, because she read it in her book club. THe book was recommended by a high school reading list but the content is appropriate for adults as well. The story tackles the coming of age, first love, racial prejudice and political issues of the 1960's.

People LOVE this book and I'm usually a fan of Southern trauma, female protagonist. Maybe the lead character was too miserable, even for me.
