My only disappointment was that I didn't know about this book sooner. Obviously, the author makes it out of North Korea - no spoilers here! - but how she does it, her laser-sharp social observations and descriptions of defector life are intense. The driving action of the plot itself (early life in North Korea, somewhat accidental escape to China, expat life and subterfuge and the ultimate tense journey to reunite her family) would be enough to keep the pages turning on this one... but the real b

Really glad to have read it, but so so hard to hear at times the years long process to overcome the indoctrination of the regime, the many many people who take financial and moral advantage of defectors and refugees. I did get very caught in the twists and turns and found myself gasping with worry about all the times their lives were in danger.
