Enjoyed this one more than I thought I would. Still, won't get my vote for Thumbs Up. Good girl power book. ...more

Possibly the best book I've read all year, with only a few caveats. It's got everything I would have loved in high school: a clear feminist bent, a pseudo-mystery and a weird love triangle, all while making you think. It was also a well written entertaining romp through boarding school.

I did not think I would enjoy this book as much as I did--the first fifty pages or so I found a little boring, and I think that the feminist message in this book is a little muddled (Frankie wanting to penetrate the all-male secret society, but just so she could prove to the BOYS that she could do it--not herself). However, for a teenage girl, I think the message is empowering and the plot is amusing.

Fun, smart, and feminist young adult book. Basic synopsis: prep school girl gets hot boyfriend, but instead of settling for honorary inclusion in his cool kids club, outwits them all with inspiration from Foucault and the founders of SantArchy and the Brides of March. Awesome.

Frankie is terrific -- smart, brave and mind-bogglingly independent. I loved the social commentary on boy-girl relationships, on power and rebellion, on the panopticon, on language. Another title (and the best so far) for the indie-girl list!

This is a book to put in the hands of any teen girl who 1) loves words, 2) questions authority, and 3) is almost consumed by love. Charming, witty, etc: a perfect book for fans of Gilmore Girls.
